Shelby’s Home Tour After Renovation

Today we’re sharing a home tour of my home after renovation along with all the before photos. We have been working on this home since Feb 2021 and I’d say it finally feels done. Everything else I want to do is truly cherry on top type of projects.

FLOOR PLAN & FLOW

BEFORE

Normally we walk into a home and begin removing walls to add flow. The dedicated spaces of the family room and kitchen in this home seemed to really work though, The kitchen flowing into the dining and overflowing into the large open family room space. The porte chochere between the garage and the home was inclosed by the previous homeowner, creating a flex space. It also created a circular flow from the kitchen and family room. It’s that fun floorpan that kids really love! And that space became the kids playroom!

AFTER

The home was livable but really needed some style and love! To update the kitchen we kept the original layout but removed the cabinets on the left to make the space feel more open. The peninsula was modified to add a couple small barstools but the biggest changes were the addition of a coffee bar, upper cabinets to the ceiling and a modern vent hood. All these changes created form and function along with the aesthetic we wanted to see. Thankfully the one thing this home had going for it were these amazing Quartzite counter. They look like marble but are much easier care. This was a huge cost savings and added the high end look we love!

LIVING ROOM

BEFORE

The floors were a cheap vinyl plank that was peeling up. So we removed the old pony walls and brought all the spaces together using a hardwood floor throughout. The living room had old paneling that we might have painted if it had been in better shape. The addition of board and batten really turned out amazing though and we’re so happy with the way it turned out. We added a faux fireplace later to simply add more character. All the lighting in the home needed an update and fixtures were chosen to create the simple modern cottage vibe we were going for in the home.

AFTER

One of the ways we saved money on this entire home Reno was by thrifting furniture and decor. The living room jaybird sofa was at our local ReHome store, brand new for a fraction of the cost. The chair was a Facebook Marketplace find. We simply added a new French pleated cushion and this classic leather beauty looks like $1000 chair, we paid only $60 for it! The art, accessories and coffee table all came from a local antique and vendor mall. The TV council and entry piece were also thrifted and transformed using a bit of labor and lots of black paint! The hug and window treatments were new. The mix of modern and vintage makes this one of our favorite living rooms we’ve designed.

PLAYROOM

We love being able to look into the playroom from the kitchen or the living room. However, because this room was in plain view from the other spaces we wanted it to feel a little more sophisticated. The mural wallpaper from Woodchip and Magnolia did just the trick. It is playful yet such high style. The furnishings were chosen with little ones in mind. The coffee table fitted with two small poufs is perfect for coloring and it gets used every single day! The Facebook Marketplace makeover with baskets allows for storage of toys and another large wicker trunk also holds stuffies and other larger items.

But this is the room you enter from the garage and the backyard so we needed it to function as a drop spot too. A DIY peg rail as you walk in holds backpacks, coats and keys. The kids love this room but we can enjoy time in there with the small chairs. It’s a great place to cozy up with a book!

GIRL’S ROOM

Quinns furniture and rug came over from the nursery in the old house. But we refreshed her room with a pretty pale pink paint. We added a chandelier to give her room a little more glamorous look. The addition of vintage butterfly art and a gold guilded mirror created the sweet little girls room we were after! Quinn loves to read and the nugget is the perfect size for her and the space. We added a piece of thrifted art above her dresser and the room was complete. Perfect in pink for our little princess!

HALL BATH

BEFORE

This bathroom was all wrong! Long and boring. It was also very dated and it took a bit of thought to transform it to what it became. The biggest challenge was the odd counter in the back that looked like a gas station changing table. We came up with the idea to create a linen cabinet. So we replaced all the doors on the cabinet fronts on both the vanity and the back cabinet and then added a top created the linen cabinet. We put in all new counters and a tub. But the charm came in with the stunning blue wallpaper! New marble look octagon floors were installed. We added a vintage barn door and new lighting. The mirror over the vanity need to be very large since the vanity was so long. So we decided to simple frame the existing mirror to complete the space. We love the way it turned out!

BOY’S NURSERY

Then came baby Luke! This is our boy nursery! Inspiration came from a few different designers merging this room into one! We wanted a more gentlemen’s look to grow with him. We used the vintage car prints because Luke’s grandpa loves old cars. The sconces were very affordable but look so sophisticated with metal and wood accents. The room was done in a time crunch since baby was on the way so lots of the items, like lighting, were sourced for quick ship on Amazon. The basket trunk calls to the basket pendant light and adds warmth to the room. The perfect blue was chosen for the shiplap wall and runs throughout on the doors and moulding. Again, we used a vintage dresser we found on Facebook Marketplace. The fun blue hand dyed flag came from Etsy. And the Scottish plaid rug finished the room and we were ready for baby boy!

GUEST ROOM

There wasn’t alot to do with the guest room. We simply installed everything as it was in the old house. The only thing that didn’t quite fit was the area rug. But that ended up to be a blessing since we needed it in another space!

PRIMARY BEDROOM

BEFORE
AFTER

I’m not sure why but the primary room always seems to be last on the list! But this room was worth waiting for with all it’s cozy and warm feels. The biggest obstacle was the window over the bed. So this room started with combing through lots of inspiration of bed in front of window. The simple linen bedding and Indian Wool pillows really pair perfectly with a woven wood shade. The lighting in the room is had to be just right for the lower ceilings and this chandelier was everything. We spent more than we wanted but it definitely makes the room. The addition of another vintage barn door adds character and even more warmth. We shopped our home to find rug we weren’t using anymore and thankfully it was the perfect fit! We added a chair and a metal frame mirror to add function and interest to the odd shaped nook in front of the closet. There was an odd coat like closet by the entry that we removed when we painted and that’s the last little piece to finish this space. But overall it’s done and we couldn’t be happier!

PRIMARY BATHROOM

This home didn’t have a dedicated primary bathroom. This bath had a door to the primary bedroom but also a door to the hall. So the first thing was to close off the bath to the hallway. Second was to design a space that was pretty small to feel like a spa retreat. So we ripped out the bath and created a large walk in shower. The drama comes from closing it in with glass and adding floor to ceiling Chloe tile. Covering the ceiling draws your eye up and in to the room. Again the Quartzite counters were a huge bonus to the home and the cabinet just needed new door fronts to make it look brand new. The floor tile need to coordinate with the marble and Chloe and this blue stone looking tile really is the one! We added new lighting, hardware and mirrors. Now this really is a spa retreat all dedicated to the primary bedroom.
