Modern Farmhouse New Build Home Tour with Jessica of @The.Old.Barn
I am so excited to take you on a second tour of Jessica’s gorgeous home! Our first tour of @The.old.barn’s home was such a hit, with over 240k views on YouTube! And now, we’re back to answer all the questions we received from viewers and show you all the amazing updates she’s made in the past two years.
We’ll be sharing paint colors, ways to save when building a home and even home to keep your home clean! So buckle up and get ready for some serious home design inspiration!
Exterior
Our first comment/question is about the home exterior!
“Love your channel Shelby. Can we see more of the outside next time? The thumbnail is breathtaking, let us see more!”
They’re begging for more exterior, and honestly, who can blame them? That view is breathtaking!
Jessica really went above and beyond with her exterior design. She wanted to keep it simple yet stunning, and boy did she deliver! From the big gable roof to that inviting front porch, everything about it just screams “come on in and stay awhile!“
And let’s talk about those textures! The mix of board & batten, painted brick, and unpainted brick at the base just adds so much interest and personality. She used Sherwin Williams Pure White for the board & batten and painted brick, while the shutters got a splash of Sherwin Williams Uncertain Gray, which is technically gray, but honestly, it looks more like a beautiful blue to me. One things for sure, it’s definitely not uncertain about being gorgeous! 😉
Jessica decided to use Fireside by Meridian brick at the base – not only does it look great, but it’s also super practical! That brick is like a superhero, protecting the white board & batten from any dirt splashing up and giving us a sneaky way to hide any mess.
And let’s not forget about that garage! Jessica really went all out, adding barn sconces, a pergola over the doors, and some decorative metal accents that make those doors look like something straight out of a fairytale. We’re all about the little details, and Jessica absolutely nailed them!
Entry
Step right into Jessica’s house and prepare to be blown away! You’re greeted with a foyer that’s simply stunning, packed with character. And if you glance to the left, you’ll spot the most charming office ever – the perfect spot to unleash your inner creativity, read a book or simply relax! Jessica has a map on the wall that has a pin in all the spots that one of her floor plans is being built. I was shocked how many there were.
I truly believe you can never have too much millwork! Whether it’s shiplap, board & batten or picture frame molding it adds so much character, but it can be pricey! Jessica and her husband Cody managed to save a ton by tackling that DIY project themselves. Labor is a huge expense in building a home and this team is wise on finding ways to save.
Now, let’s tackle another questions we continue to get.
What is a the brand and name of the floors?
Jessica has engineered hardwood from Build Direct’s European Oak Whitewash Collection, in the gorgeous shade of Robin Bandsawn. With natural knots and unique variations in each board, this flooring is bursting with character, and the wire brushed texture only adds to its rustic charm. Trust me, you won’t want to step off this flooring once you’re on it! Jessica has a full blog post on the pros and cons on this flooring if you’re in the market!
Living Room
Jessica’s living room is a showstopper every time it appears on my Instagram feed. The soaring ceilings and floods of natural light are simply dreamy!
During the tour, Jessica shared a helpful tip to have a neutral base in your design, making it easy to switch things up and add fun pops of color and texture with textiles and accents. It’s a great strategy for those of us who love to switch things up often.
We couldn’t help but chuckle at a viewer’s comment…
“Wow!! How does she keep it so clean and perfect?! My house looks so lived in even after a weekend of cleaning”
When we asked Jessica how she maintains her tidy home, she revealed that it’s not always picture-perfect, but she strives to keep the main areas “5 minutes from clean.” She recommends using systems like storage lockers for the kids and designated spots for paperwork to make organization effortless and enjoyable.
Dining Room
Oh, the dining room in Jessica’s home is absolutely charming! The light fixture gives off such a coastal vibe that makes you feel like you’re right by the ocean.
What I love most about Jessica’s home is how open yet dedicated each space is. You can easily transition from the living room to the dining room and then to the kitchen without feeling cramped or disconnected. It’s the perfect balance of open concept living!
One of the most frequently asked questions we received during the tour was about the paint color of the buffet in the dining area.
“Such a beautiful and delightful home. I wish I knew the paint color on the credenza in the dining area. Such a pretty blue.”
Well, hold onto your hats because that “blue” is actually Sherwin Williams Uncertain Gray, the same color as the exterior shutters of the house. It’s amazing how different a paint color can look in different parts of a home. That’s why we always recommend testing out swatches in different lighting conditions before committing to a color.
Kitchen
Jessica’s kitchen has been receiving a ton of love, and for a good reason! The beams framing the stunning apron sink are a showstopper, and the quartzite front on the sink gives it a European touch.
“I love your idea of two 30” stoves…what brand are your stoves/ovens?”
Saving money was also a priority for Jessica, and she achieved it by installing two 30″ Frigidaire ranges instead of one large, expensive range. It’s a smart decision as one 60″ Ilve or Vicking range can cost between $11K to $25K, while the two 30″ Frigidaire ranges she chose only cost $2400, with the same functionality!
Jessica’s trick was to choose ranges without a backsplash. The Frigidaire ranges blend so seamlessly that it’s hard to tell there are two separate appliances. This is a clever way to save money without sacrificing style or functionality.
Primary Bedroom
Jessica’s primary bedroom is simply stunning! From the gorgeous pendants over the nightstands, to the cozy vintage mantle, and the charming barn doors that lead to the dreamy bathroom – this space is truly a sight to behold. And the fact that you can see into the screened-in porch from the bedroom is just the cherry on top – It’s the perfect way to entice me out of that cozy bed!
What makes this room even more interesting is the mix of shiplap and board and batten. The different millwork styles add depth and texture to this neutral oasis.
We received a lot of questions about the stunning sliding doors in the bathroom.
“Where did she get the sliding doors to her bathroom? We are about to finish our master, and I love the design of those doors!”
You might be surprised to learn that these were actually a DIY project! Although the intricate details make it hard to believe that they were made in a weekend, Jessica revealed that they used scraped wood to create these stunning doors when they ran out of budget during the build.
Another creative way Jessica saved money was by finding her bathroom tiles on Facebook Marketplace. It’s not every day you can score high-end design tiles on a budget, but Jessica’s resourcefulness paid off – the tiles look like they came straight from a pricey showroom!
If you’re interested in Jessica’s floor plan, you can purchase it online along with other plans that she and her husband designed. They have a variety of sizes available, ranging from 2,300 to 5,000 square feet, so you can choose what suits your needs. Each plan is designed with thoughtful symmetry and focal points throughout, resulting in unique and classic beauty for each home. Follow this link to browse her plans!
I hope you had a blast touring Jessica’s stunning home, just like I did! It was an absolute delight to share both design and budget tips that are rarely found together in such beautiful spaces. Jessica’s genius truly shines through in her ability to make it all work seamlessly, and she proves that style and affordability can go hand in hand.
