Get the Look: Cozy, Neutral Master Retreat

This cozy, neutral master retreat was designed by our team through our E-Design service. It was a joy to work with our client Traci to create a space special for her and her husband. You will find the sources of this entire space at the end of the post.

Comfy bedding is a MUST in any master retreat. I know this is an obvious one, but so often I’ve run to the nearest department store to grab pretty bedding that ended up being not comfy and was torn up too soon. We used Parachute bedding in this space and it is so beautiful, soft, and everything you’d want in bedding. It’s designed in Venice Beach and responsibly manufactured by expert craftspeople around the globe. This is the Percale Duvet cover in the color sand with is a warm neutral tone.

P.S. Parachute did not sponsor this post. I just LOVE this bedding. The simple design, the colors, the quality and the culture of the brand. It’s just all good.

As far as we’re concerned, there’s no such thing as too many layers when it comes to bedding. We use multiple blankets and pillows to make a cozy dream to crawl into. In this space, we added texture with this knitted throw at the end of the bed. The midnight colored coverlet with matching shams is from Pom Pom and layers so nice with the Parachute duvet. The cherry on top was our Wildflower Jasmin Throw Pillow.

We gave our clients storage with these nightstands that are nice and wide. Teamed with a lamp it created a ton of function in the space. Once you’re all snuggled up, the last thing you want to do is crawl out of bed to hit the power switch on your reading light so lamps in an arm’s reach is a must.

This space was completely transformed with a coat of paint. We didn’t only paint the walls; We even painted the furniture. This dresser was dated and not giving our client the look she was hoping for, but it was something that had proven itself functional for them for a long time. A little paint and new hardware and this pretty thing looks brand new. These older pieces we have are often so well made and sturdy compared to the items that are being mass produced today, so not only are you saving money, but you’re investing into something that will last.

I have a secret about this reading nook…The chandelier is from Pottery Barn Kids. I loved the look of beaded chandeliers for this space, but I couldn’t find anything to the specific scale we were looking for. Not only was this to scale for a dedicated reading nook AND it’s affordable. The only downside was it took a little bit to arrive (over three weeks). It was worth the wait and looks like it was made for the mirror.

The chairs in the reading nook are so ridiculously comfy. They are simple enough to continue through many design shifts. I love that the nailheads were minimal, but gave the piece some structure. They’re also very cost effective, but don’t worry you don’t lose functionality with this great price.

So where do you start when designing a master retreat? STOP. You think you know the answer to this question. You think it’s Pinterest. You might even be on this post from Pinterest. My friend, before you start searching the land of pretty for inspiration look at your family and your needs firsts. Start with a few key questions and let them guide you through all this gorgeous inspiration.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE DESIGNING A MASTER BEDROOM:
  • How will I use this space (sleeping- of course, reading, resting, dressing room, etc)?
  • Who else will be using this space (husband/wife, pets, etc.)?
  • What will you be storing in this room (clothing, personal items, etc)?
  • What is your budget for this space?
  • Is storage or square footage an issue? Do you need to maximize space?
  • What is the overall aesthetic you envision?
  • If you could guess…how might you feel about this room in 2 years? 5 years? 10 years?

I’m off to get cozy and dream of my own master suite. Comment your favorite things to include in a master retreat. I love to hear from you in the comments. Sweet dreams, my friends.
