How to Select the PERFECT Wallpaper – Gender Neutral Kids Room Design Plans

Wallpaper is one of those design elements that can make a HUGE impact on a space, but how do you choose the perfect one? How do you find the right color, pattern, and style? Today, we’re sharing tips and inviting you to help us select the perfect wallpaper for two projects we currently have in progress.

I’m designing a gender-neutral room for my kids, and I have a client who is creating a space for their grandkids in their new home. I’ll be sharing both spaces in this post and giving practical steps on how to select wallpaper!

Step 1: What Mood Are You Trying to Set?

With wallpaper, you have the opportunity to get playful, moody, serene, or any other vibe you want to create in a room. While paint, furniture, art, and other design accents can help you achieve the same, wallpaper has a unique superpower – it makes the strongest impact!

My favorite places to use wallpaper are kids’ rooms, powder baths, and laundry rooms, but there’s no space off-limits! Think about the mood you want to create when someone walks into the room, and let that guide your wallpaper selection.

In these kids’ spaces, I’m aiming for a look that’s playful yet sophisticated. The colors and patterns can evoke feelings of creativity and inspire the kids to use their imagination. I plan on layering different patterns in both spaces.

Step 2: Consider Pieces You Already Have

Right now, I’m working on refreshing my kids’ room, but I didn’t want to source all new items. So, we selected the wallpaper color based on pieces we already own. We will make a few additional purchases to complete the design and paint the trim and doors to tie the look together.

My goal is to make the room more gender-neutral since both my daughter and son will be sharing it temporarily. If that wasn’t my approach, I might have matched the wallpaper to the existing deep blue trim.

I created a moodboard for my kid’s room. Here you can see I’m doing blue, green and pink! Lots of patterns layered together. This print I’m going with is Ditsy Stripes customized with a softer blue (Cotton, Frond, Haven, Thyme, Wisdom).

For my client, we wanted the wallpaper to complement the fun bathroom selections we made without being “too girly.” The bathroom has a moody pink tile with marble floors. We found a great patterned wallpaper, but changed it from a deep seafoam to a beige with a slight purple undertone.

Bonus Tip: Create a mood board with all the pieces you have, the ones you plan to purchase, and the wallpaper options you’re considering. This will help you visualize the overall look. Here is the moodboard for my client’s room.

Step 3: How to Customize Your Wallpaper Colors

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found wallpaper prints I love, but the colors weren’t quite right. This is where Love vs Design comes in. I ordered samples for my kids’ room and was so impressed with the quality and the ability to customize the colors that I ordered from them for my client as well.

You can see all our options and where we had you vote in the video here. One fun option was the Plum Swirling Vines Print on the far right. Plum is a trend we’re loving right now, but we chose the Wildflower Block Print in Tawny because we felt it would offer our clients more versatility in their space. Thankfully, our followers agreed with us! I love when we’re all on the same page.

Another option I considered for both my kids’ room and my client’s was the Block Print Daisy in its original color scheme. It’s such a classic and universally loved print. If you’re looking for something that doesn’t feel too risky, that’s definitely it.

Time to Install

Since you’ve voted, I’ve moved forward and ordered the custom wallpaper for both spaces! I’m so excited to share the finished rooms with you. I plan to install mine next week, and our client’s home is wrapping up quickly, so they should be ready to move forward within the month.

I’d love to know your thoughts and what room you’re considering wallpaper for. Be sure to check out Love vs Design and have fun customizing their amazing selections!
