Home Tour Q&A: Design Secrets, Paint Tips, and Major Room Updates
Welcome to our latest home tour!
We’re diving into the questions we receive most often across our YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram channels. This tour is all about Mom’s house, with some exciting updates and tips on everything from paint colors to decor decisions. Plus, we’ve got answers to your burning questions on renovations, flooring, and more. Let’s get started!
VIDEO HOME TOUR
Home Before
Can I see a side-by-side comparison of each room?
Our first question came from a viewer who asked for a side-by-side comparison of each room in the house. While we’ve shared plenty of before-and-afters in the past, it’s been a while since we’ve done a full comparison. This house had a lot of deferred maintenance when mom first bought it, but the transformation has been incredibly gratifying. You can see all the befores in the video tour above.
Dining Room
How did you decide to combine the formal living and dining spaces?
This house was originally built with a formal living and dining room, but we knocked down the dividing wall to create a larger, more functional dining area. The key to any design is to make your spaces work for how you live. If formal spaces aren’t your style, don’t be afraid to open things up!
What are your thoughts on open floor plans?
While open floor plans have been popular for years, there’s a trend toward more closed-off spaces. Luckily, this house offers a bit of both: open flow between the rooms but with clearly defined areas. If we had an unlimited budget, I would install accordion doors along the back wall for even more flexibility.
Guest Bathroom
Should you hang wallpaper in a bathroom?
Yes! Despite what some contractors say, you can absolutely hang wallpaper in a bathroom. The key is to use high-quality, durable wallpaper and hire a skilled contractor. Avoid peel-and-stick wallpaper in areas with moisture, as it won’t hold up. If you’re doing it yourself, traditional pasted wallpaper is the way to go. Use lots of glue!
Guest Room
What paint color did you choose for the guest room?
We opted for Bear Pine Mountain, a rich, fun shade of green that’s especially popular around the holidays. It’s a beautiful way to make the space feel cozy and welcoming.
Master Bedroom
What wall color did you use in the master bedroom?
In the master bedroom, we used Sherwin Williams Shoji White. It’s a creamy, warm white that adds a cozy, moody feel to the room, especially in the evening. Fun fact: I also used this color on the exterior of my house, but it looks much whiter outside due to the natural light. Always test paint samples in different lighting conditions!
Is the paint finish flat or satin?
The walls are painted in a flat finish, while the trim is done in satin. This creates a subtle contrast and adds dimension to the space. We even painted the ceiling and window trim in Shoji White for a seamless look.
Where did you get your bed and rug?
The rug is from Ruggable, and while we haven’t washed it yet, it spot cleans well. The bed is from a local dealer, but we have a link for it on our LTK page, along with all the other room decor.
What do you regret about this room?
If I had to choose something I regret, it would be the light fixture. While it was the right scale and price at the time, I’ve never loved it. I’m considering painting it charcoal gray for a more dramatic look.
Flooring
What kind of flooring did you install?
We chose Red Oak plank flooring throughout the house. In the master bedroom, we added a herringbone pattern for extra character. The same wood and stain color are used throughout the home, but in this room, we diluted the stain to create a lighter, more customized look.
Master Bathroom
Is this bathroom really farmhouse style?
While we’re known as Farmhouse Living, some viewers have pointed out that this bathroom looks more luxurious than farmhouse. The truth is, we love blending styles, and this space is definitely more “bougie farmhouse.” But don’t worry—we still have chickens and goats in the yard to keep it authentic!
Where did you get your vintage doors?
We source all our vintage doors from Antiques and Vintage. They add so much character to every project, and we love using them whenever we can.
Kitchen
When are you doing the stone backsplash?
After much consideration, we’ve decided not to go with the stone backsplash. While it would have looked stunning, the cost and effort to install it behind the appliances were just too much. Instead, we’ll be using vertical shiplap and a complementary tile, which will be far more budget-friendly and still look beautiful.
What are your countertops?
The countertops are Taj Mahal quartzite. I was able to get a great deal by asking for slabs with color variations that others might not have liked. This allowed me to work with a high-end material at a lower price point. Always ask your stone yard for slabs with flaws—you might find a hidden gem!
Living Room
Are your floors real hardwood?
Yes! We’ve run the same Red Oak hardwood flooring throughout the main areas of the house. It’s durable and timeless, and we love the cohesive look it creates.
Should I use different white paints in different rooms?
Absolutely. While we kept the main spaces cohesive with Alabaster, but we used Shoji White in the master bedroom for a cozier feel. Don’t be afraid to mix and match in secondary spaces if it makes sense for your design.
Updates & Future Projects
What’s the latest on your sliding door project?
The sliding doors upstairs are functional but not yet finished. They’ve already been useful for separating spaces when the air conditioner broke, but we still have to add trim, door handles, and a metal accent piece.
What are you planning for the upstairs?
We’re turning the upstairs into a bunky room for our growing family of grandkids. There are also plans to either shiplap or wallpaper the guest bedroom, but those details are still being finalized.
