Hardwood Patterns Inspiration
Mom recently added hardwood floors with a herringbone pattern and an inlay that had a darker trim. It’s stunning and had me so inspired to peruse Pinterest to find more hardwood pattern inspiration. I know you’re going to love these designs.
First here’s mom’s room complete. She used antique brown for a stain diluted to make the lighter stain. The inlay is antique brown full strength which is the same color as the hardwoods in the rest of the house. This creates a great flow with the flooring. Hardwoods are timeless and there is so much room for creativity!

Herringbone is a classic way to lay wood floors. It gives an air of sophistication. When you add a band to surround it just elevates it even more.
Inlays are a great way to transition between a herringbone pattern and a straight hardwood flooring.
Herringbone costs more per square foot because of the cuts. You lose material but it is also very labor intensive. For that reason, it’s good to use herringbone or patterned flooring and inlays in smaller areas like entryways. It’s more cost effective and packs a big punch!
When you lay a herringbone farcing each way it creates a beautiful diamond pattern. Using this pattern in a hall or entry gives interest.
The great thing about a herringbone wood floor is that while it’s classic, it goes with any style. Patterned floor looks good in contemporary/modern spaces, traditional and everything in between!

The use of a white oak really modernizes the look. This is a perfect floor in this room with a bit of a coastal vibe!
Many times people use a pencil inlay in more rare woods. The inlay gives definition and sets apart the area laid in herringbone and gives a high end look and feel.
Sometimes inlay is laid with simple straight lines. Other times the inlay used in patterns to feel more unique and special. Again it’s the best way to transition from one room to the next.
Herringbone is special and timeless but parquet flooring is coming back in an updated style. When parquet is done well it can be stunning. If it’s too busy it can date a home. This patter is perfection!
Old wood floors are by far the most charming of all. The floors laid in different directions as seen here are character overload!
Some people might be prone to pull out this intricate floor. It would be so sad to lose this rich history. And the cost of mahogany patterned flooring today would be insane. This is definitely high style and design.
