Five Home Design Lessons I’ve Learned from Mom

The most common comment we receive is how people love that we’re a mother-daughter team. We’ve been working together for going on 7 years now and it’s been a fun ride with a couple of counseling visits and lots of laughter. I thought it’d be fun on Mothers Day to share 5 Home Design Tips I’ve learned from my mom and have her share feedback on each tip.

LET NATURE INSPIRE YOU

If you’ve followed us for any amount of time you’ve heard this. Mom is always bringing fresh stems and elements of nature indoors. This makes such a huge difference in updating a tabletop or mantle and feels completely new for basically free.

EMBRACE TRENDS BUT ALSO BE YOURSELF

Mom has touched all the trends over the years but always stayed true to herself. From the southwestern days when she had a pastel print sofa to the faux finish walls of the Tuscan days to the farmhouse, she loves to play with what’s trending but not to keep up with anyone but because it’s so much fun to her. She makes changes over time and builds on top of the old trends so that it’s sustainable.

SET THE TABLE & ALWAYS BE READY FOR GUESTS

Mom’s door is always open whether it’s family or neighbors or friends or a friend of a friend that needs a place to stay. We’ve shown off her guest spaces and her tablescapes so many times and I promise it’s not just for the gram. She loves having guests and her pantry is always stocked ready to make dinner for as many people that show up. There are genuinely no strangers here.

Her guest room and bathroom are always stocked with items that guests might forget. From shampoo and tooth brushes to a sweet treat, she has baskets that are stocked like you’re at the sweetest bed and breakfast.

BE INSPIRED BY UNLIKELY SPACES

Mom will pull inspiration from restaurants she’s gone to or places she’s traveled. Her bathroom design has inspiration from a dining room. When she’s designing she doesn’t box herself into only bathroom inspiration. Her mind is open to all the possibilities.

SMALL CHANGES MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

She’s always making small changes. You saw last week when we shared the patio that switching pillows and plants completely transformed the space from season to season. She does this seasonally in almost every room. She also will switch things from room to room. Moving a chair from the guestroom to the living room can completely change both spaces and costs no money. We have a lot of fun doing that.
