Coastal Farmhouse Living Room Reveal
When we launched Farmhouse Living in 2016 the first thing we shared was a tour of my mom’s (Michelle) home – the suburban farmhouse. This tour is what launched the community and made us fall in love with this little blog! Today we are excited to be giving you a tour of mom’s new home. It was a house built in the 80’s with no updates, but the perfect layout for my parents since my mom loves open concept and my dad loves separate rooms. We’ll be sharing more about the layout soon, but today we are revealing the Living Room.
The best way to kick off any design project is with a fresh coat of paint. We chose Sherwin William’s Alabaster (SW 7008). We didn’t want to go too white, but definitely didn’t want the color to appear cream or show any yellow undertones. Alabaster definitely achieves this!
PRO TIP: When choosing a paint color definitely test it in the space. Alabaster looks great in this space because it has tons of natural light. It might not be white enough for you if you don’t have tons of windows like this living room does. I only have one large window in my living room so I’m choosing to go a little whiter.
If you’ve been following us for a while much of this space will look familiar to you, specifically, the slipcovered couches, the coffee table, and my dad’s recliner is non-negotiable. It’s worth mentioning for the hundredth time how much we love these slipcovered sofas. It’s dog, kid and wine proof. Yes, we’ve spilled red wine and they look awesome still. You can find the sofas here.
We love faux florals and greenery, but there was so much beautiful greenery (maybe weeds) in the backyard that we popped them in some Dollar General Vases and they make such a statement. We’ve been replacing them with fresh cuttings every 3-4 weeks and they look good until then. If you’re on a budget for decor I highly recommend this design strategy 😉
We decided to try the layered rug trend in this space and we think it looks great. It took me a second to get used to the look, but it definitely made a statement that neutrals often can’t do on their own. Mom says what she loves most about the layered rug look it that she can layer a thinner rug on top of a jute rug and the jute rug helps it stay in place while the thin one can be tossed in the washing machine when necessary. We are crazy dog people so washable rugs are important.
The biggest update in this space was the fireplace and the built ins around it. Mom chose to go European with the German schmear on the white stone. We used a reclaimed barn beam for a mantle and white concrete for the hearth for a more modern look. To the right of the fireplace, mom had my dad weld a box for firewood. We live in Texas, but the second we can call the season we’re in “Fall” my mom has a fire going so I wasn’t surprised she wanted a large portion of her wall dedicated to firewood. These befores blew my mind when I looked back on what it was before.
That gorgeous fig you see above is real and the pot is just from our local Home Depot. I love the way it was cut to grow and it was the perfect height for the room. It adds so much life to the room and also looks very high end. My dad walked in the day we brought it in and said “How much did that cost?” 😋
When designing a gathering space like the living room we try to layer in as much seating as possible. These poufs from Article are a great option because they’re comfortable and don’t take up much space or block the view of the fireplace.
The living room is open to the breakfast nook and the kitchen making it perfect for hosting. The long layout gives each room a dedicated feel which appealed to my dad who prefers closed concepts. We’ve shared the kitchen + dining room in a separate post! Here’s a sneak peek of before and afters.

That coffee table is amazing where is it from please? The whole room is perfect
Hi Angi! The coffee table was actually a flea market find. The top of the table is made from an old door. I wish I had a link to a reproduction, but I haven’t been able to find anything similar yet. I will stay on the hunt though 😊We’ve had the coffee table for a good while and I’m glad that it’s been able to fit into this new design for my mom’s new home.
I’m glad it was able to inspire you!
How stunning!! Beautiful job! 🙂 Do you know where the side table in the living room with the gorgeous turned leg is from? Thank you and best wishes to them in their lovely new home! 🙂
So pretty! Question – what size were the rugs you used? Was the bottom a 9×12 and the top an 8×10? Just wondering how to make this look work!
I have the exact same coffee table and I bought years ago from Wisteria.com. However, a few years ago they something similar at pottery pain. Not exactly the same but very close from Pottery Barn.
Love!!! Can you tell me what the color and brand of the stone for the fireplace is and what color grout you used?
Hi Monti! The stone is just Austin Stone with white mortar added using the german smear method! Our biggest tip is to make sure you have white sand in the mortar.
Hi! Do you happen to have any more tips on how you did this chimney? We have Austin stone as well and I was looking into white washing but this German smear method seems easier. I want your exact look for our living room. Most German smear videos are showing partial covering techniques. Do you have any recommendations or a step-by-step?
Hey Hannah! We actually didn’t DIY this so we don’t have the best technical tips, but I can tell you to make sure to get white sand and mortar. When we started we bought off white that the sand and mortar typically come in and it just looked dirty. Once we switched the crew simply smeared it on and it looked amazing. I hope this helps!
Do you have any more information that you could give about how the concrete hearth was made and size? Thank you! We are building a home and determined we like the concrete whit hearth more than an off-white stone.
Hi there, could you tell me what size your tv is? I love this layout!
I love your coffee table! Where did you get it?
It seems a moroccan door turned to a table
What is the name brand of the flooring you have. Its gorgeous 😍!
Can you tell me where the light fixture is from? It is beautiful
I love the layered rug look. I’m was planning on using similar rugs myself and then found your post and just love the top rug that you used. Would you be able to confirm that you used the Ivory/Anthracite colour way in your living space. And would you also be able to tell me how the colour looks in real life, is it a grey blue or darker.
Thanks Rachael
The wooden table in your living room looks sooo good. Can you please tell me where i can get one from?
Hi! Love the fireplace!!! Did you order the fireplace hearth and have it custom made or DIY?
Hi Trang! It was custom-made by our stone mason.
