Rustic Office Refresh + Accent Walls: Yes or No?

If you’ve followed us for any amount of time you know we have very strong happy feelings about Shiplap. We even have a shirt that says so. Shiplap is a clean, effortless statement. Mom is selling her house so she has been working on some small upgrades to help show it really well. She put a herringbone wall up to allow the space to look updated and intentional. It’s the first room to the left of the entry so she wanted it to really wow her guests and potential buyers.

As we were planning and discussing this accent wall to dress up her space, I started gathering my favorite inspiration photos for accent walls and thinking about the impact they make on the space. Accent walls are perfect for those who love neutrals.

I’m a minimalist who loves a big statement. Those characteristic don’t necessarily go together, that’s where accent walls come in! With a good accent wall, neutrals don’t have to be boring! Specially in a room like my mom’s office where natural elements are the focus of the space. This herringbone texture all over the wall would be a little overwhelming so the small niche made the perfect starting and stopping point. 

You have so many styling choices. 

The possibilities are endless. You have unlimited paint options, as well as other surfaces and materials. Even the location of your accent wall is purely personal. The only thing I would shy away from is a single painted accent wall. As I was scrolling through Pinterest and Houzz for inspiration there was only one with a painted wall that made me happy dance. The others simply looked unfinished too me. But when you mix it up with different texture, patterns, or wall treatments, an accent wall looks intentional. **Personal opinion so if you love it GO FOR IT. It’s about what makes YOU happy**

They’re great for small spaces.

 Accent walls are an ideal way to fake space in small areas, especially when done in a deep hue, like black. I recently saw the color Ink on the Havenly blog. Talk about the perfect accent color for a small space. It’s an amazing alternative to black. I have an itch to use it somewhere ASAP.

They can help divide a space. 

An accent wall is the easiest way to divide spaces in a room. Open living areas can be instantly transformed into two – or more – defined spaces with a wood texture or wallpaper. Open floor plans are trending, but there’s something wonderful about intentional defined spaces. With accent walls you can have an open floor plan with intentional, dedicated spaces. It’s a win-win!
